| We Have been breeding Catahoulas for 20 years now. We want a catahoula that is capable of doing anything you want it to. Our goal has always been to breed catahoulas that: 1) WORK/HUNT. If a catahoula has no interest in working, then what's the point of breeding?? 2) CONFORMATION--a catahoula that is put together right will find it much easier to work stock. Good conformation becomes more and more established in a bloodline by selecting the best dogs, to contribute the finest example of genetics to improve the breed. If you as a breeder "forgive" faults, or overlook faults, your dogs will tell on you. But if you are wise and selective, your dogs will tell on you in a good way, too. 3) DISPOSITION-- We do not care for excessive shyness. We like out going personalities. Saltydogs are always wary of strangers, but they warm up quickly once they know a person "belongs". We do not tolerate dog aggressive or people aggressive dogs in our program. 4) COLOR--a pretty catahoula? "Pretty is as pretty can do"---And that would be in the eye of the beholder. We like flashy leopards with blue eyes like anyone else would. But some of our customers also prefer solid liver colored dogs or solid black dogs. But really, we care much more about the 1, 2, and 3 of our list of qualities. Number four (about color), to us, comes last on this quick list. A catahoula does not care what color he is when he works a wild hog. And he doesn't care what color the hog is, either! But if two dogs are equal in every OTHER area, a leopard will be more characteristic of the breed. After all, that's why we call them "leopard catahoulas", right?? We have a color to suit most anyone. You will NOT see Saltydog Catahoulas breeding excessively white dogs just to get blue eyes. As a result, our dogs stay sound. You will find little white on any of the dogs we produce. But the bottom line is: "Pretty is as pretty can do." Also true---"A beautiful dog does not eat any more than an ugly dog". Which do YOU want to feed? This is the creed that we breed our dogs by, and working/hunting desire is formost. There are volumes that could be read about Catahoulas, but that is not our intent on this website to explain those volumes. This a glimpse into our 20 years experience as dedicted NALC breeders of Saltydog Catahoulas. |
